The Storm-bag, or the worry-free storm sail

The worry-free storm sail by Voiles & Voiliers

“At more than 30 knots, you enter into another world. The sea starts to steam. Waves are short and regularly engulf the cockpit. If it were not possible to take a third reef, it’ d be panic on board. The boat gets knocked down and it is impossible to fall off. Never the less, sailing upwind requires a little more than the third reef. You need a headsail to keep the boat balanced. Hardly any production built yacht has a removable stay as standard. And yet how can you fit a storm sail without a removable stay? The Stormbag solution developed by Delta Voiles has us well and truly convinced. Easy to set up, it turned out to be more efficient than the flat storm sail which we had on board the Sun Fast 32i. When it comes to performance, the Stormbag took us by surprise. More speed and less leeway than with the storm sail! It is true to say that the leading edge of a classic storm sail is greatly disturbed by the genoa roller. The Stormbag solution has a thick leading edge but the result is much more homogeneous as a double sail is formed like a aircraft wing.”
